Bug Description

When I insert the usb D-Link DWA 131 wifi dongle, no wireless network can be detected despite the wireless adaptor is listed in Network Manager applet.
It seems that the module r8192s_usb can't set up the wireless interface correctly regarding dmesg.

Please note that I also use an embeded wireless card using iwlagn module.
(Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300)
I don't know if it can be a conflict made by the use of 2 wireless interface.
But I can't switch off this card without disabling all wireless network adaptor (even the usb dongle).

I try 2.6.36rc8 and 2.6.36 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ but there is the same issue.

I'm running Xubuntu 10.10 fresh updated includng maverick-proposed.

I try latest vanilla kernel (2.6.36-rc3 from 2010-10-20) and the module r8792s_usb has been droped.
The driver r8712u, wich replace the previous one, runs flawlessly.

Both r8792s_usb and r8712u are staging drivers, but please consider disabling the first one and enable r8712u in replacement.

sorry for the typo error, the dropped driver is r8192s_usb (not r8792s_usb).

Hi draco,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 665334

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hm, maybe I could have used this bug. Though I opened bug #720189 for the fact that in Maverick the firmware is not found. I found (at least for the hardware I was using) that simply having a link in /lib/firmware from RTL8192SU to RTL8192SE would be just working.
For Natty the same hardware seem to use the r8712u module which has the firmware built into the driver. So if just doing the link helps we could mark this bug as duplicate of mine (I'll try to get the link added to the firmware package).

In my point of view, it's not a question of firmware or link with /lib/firmware
From now, on my maverick desktop, the wireless adater is working more or less, but I still loose the connection very often, and when it happend, I have no way to retrieve the wifi connection other than a complete reboot.

As maverick is still supported, and I may not have such problems with r8712u and vanilla kernel, I consider the bug is not solved.

PS : As the connection is unstable, I'm now unable to make a distupgrade to Natty because I loose the connection before all packages where downloaded. So I can't test Natty kernel before I found a physical workaround (ethernet link, or to retrieve a LiveCD).
