Bug Description

This bug was originally reported using reportbug. Filing by proxy.
The original bug report follows:
From: Carlos Laviola <email address hidden>
To: Ubuntu Bug Tracking System <email address hidden>
Subject: no proxy support
Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2006 18:35:33 -0300
X-Mailer: reportbug 3.18ubuntu1

Package: gmail-notify
Version: 1.6.1-0ubuntu2
Severity: important

This package does not offer any proxy support, which makes it impossible
for someone behind a firewall who blocks direct web traffic to use it.
A possible suggestion would be for gmail-notify to inherit GNOME's proxy
settings.

Thank you for your bug report.
Attached debdiff should implement this.
It will be fixed during next upload.

Sorry, did anyone check this? The fix didn't work in my case (version 1.6.1 under Ubuntu Gutsy). And it could not work since urllib2 does not support ssl via proxy (http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Cookbook/Python/Recipe/456195). I corrected it in my case (http://mellit.wordpress.com/2008/03/28/gmail-notify-for-linux-with-proxy/)

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 alpha?
