Bug Description

The new UNE launcher unity in Maverick is awfully broken. It eats up much too much of the valuable screen (and unity devels only reply: make your apps smaller!) and is way too slow on typical netbook hardware (i.e. 1.6 GHz Atoms). Lucid's netbook-launcher was cool AND quick AND left the whole screen to apps, so please:

Bring netbook-launcher back to maverick's repositories! Leave the choice of the preferred UI to us!

The 2D netbook-launcher-efl is no real replacement, as the default them has much too big icons for the 1024x600 screen and looks ugly, the alternative screen is better (it looks nice, indeed) but has to be activated by typing its name into a gconf-editor variable, not very user friendly, and changing the background image requires decoding the theme file, replacing the image and encoding the theme again, nothing Joe User can be expected to handle.

netbook-launcher has been superseeded by unity. We currently have nobody who step up to keep maintaining it when I called for maintainance on planet.ubuntu.com

You're welcome to do so and assume maintainance of it if you want. Just hop on #ubuntu-desktop on freenode and ping me.
