Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

Hi !

I installed on Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop (32bit) vmware-server-console 1.0.10 (tested 1.0.6, 1.0.7 and 1.0.9) without any problem.
I ran it without any problem for a couple of days.

Today I update Ubuntu kernel to 2.6.35.22 and it is not possible to start vmware-server-console anymore.
I receive the following error:

$ sudo vmware-server-console

/usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgio-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_mapped_file_unref

No reference found on Google.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

GG

The problem can be reproduced at willing and here the steps to see it:

(1.0) Install Ubuntu 10.10 (do not run the updates)

(2.0) install vmware-server-console, you can download from
http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmserver/VMware-server-linux-client-1.0.10-203137.zip
(2.1) Launch $ sudo ./vmware-install.pl for the installation
(2.2) no problem to be reported during the installation

(3.0) Launch $ vmware-server-console and it works without any problem

(4.0) Launch the Ubuntu updates ($ sudo apt-get update and after $ sudo apt-get upgrade)

(5.0) Try to launch again $ vmware-server-console (with and without sudo), but you will get the error:

$ vmware-server-console
/usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgio-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_mapped_file_unref

and the application is closed after few seconds.

I ran $ sudo vmware-config-server-console.pl but nothing changes.

Conclusion:
Seen that the vmware-server-console was not changed, the problem is on Ubuntu side from point of view rather than on VMware side.

Could you please suggest me something to fix the problem or if you need additional information ?

Thanks and Regards

GG

I noticed the following:

$ sudo vmware-config-server-console.pl
[sudo] password for gerardo:
Configuring fallback GTK+ 2.4 libraries.

The configuration of VMware Server Console completed successfully.

but as you can see in the attached screenshot, GTK+ 2.0 was something I updated (and after I saw the problem)

Could it be linked ?

the same here. After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10, vmware-server-console, even after dowloading latest version available, afte doing 'apt-get update' and reinstalled, the erro below appears:
user@machine:~$ vmware-server-console
/usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgio-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_mapped_file_unref
user@machine:~$

first, I 'tar' -vxzf VMware-server-console-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz downloaded from http://register.vmware.com/content/download.html
and reinstalled. It was successfully according to the perl script available. As the error persisted, I installed libgio, assumed packaged in:

apt-cache search libgio
libgio-cil - CLI binding for the GIO I/O stack 2.22
libgio-fam - GLib Input, Output and Streaming Library (fam module)
libgio2.0-cil-dev - CLI binding for the GIO I/O stack 2.22

by doing

apt-get install libgio-cil libgio-fam libgio2.0-cil-dev

But the error "/usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgio-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_mapped_file_unref" still happens, even if I use root .

Any hints?

I have done additional tests on a virtual machine:

Test 1
(1) install ubuntu 10.10 (from scratch)
(2) install vmware-server-console 1.0.10
(3) upgrade ubuntu
==> I can see the problem

Test 2
(1) install Ubuntu 10.10 (from scratch)
(2) upgrade ubuntu (vmware-server-console has never been on this system before)
(3) install vmware-server-console 1.0.10
==> it works

so the upgrade causes the problem, changing something that even uninstall/reinstall of vmware-server-console can fix.

Any suggestion ?

Thanks

I discovered that in /System/Preferencea/Appearance/ I had "Clearlooks",
if I move to "Ambiance" (default) then the problem is solved.

So vmware-server-console does not accept this Appearance change.

As ridiculous as Lorenzos comment sounds, I can confirm it. Switching to Ambiance (from Human-Clearlooks) does indeed make vmware-server-console work. Switching back causes it to fail again. Several other themes also cause the failure (Dust, New Wave).

Wanted to add that I am having the same issue. Was running "Clearlooks" as well. I Changed to Gorilla, Lush, and Nodoka and am still having this problem.

Running VMWare server console 1.0.6 on Ubuntu 10.10

Thought I would add a quick update.

Downloaded and installed VMware Server Console 1.0.10 and tried it, getting the same error. Downloaded and installed version 1.0.9 and 1.0.6 and still getting the same error message. Which is very odd, because prior to upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 VMware Console 1.0.6 was installed and running fine.

Another update.

I went as far back as VMware Server Console 1.0.1 and get the same error as well as the following:
