Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Totem does not show video when I click and drag single WMV into totem.
If I choose multiple WMV or other video files then go back to the first WMV that was not seen can be seen probably.
When I double-click the WMV file, it would work fine.

Yes, in a way.

You just need to click and drag a folder or folder into totem over and
over then it will happen. I do not know when or how many times or
conditions but it happens to me everyday and I have to reset every day.
It happens all the sudden.
I cannot avoid. If you can teach me how to kill it when it happens, I
would appreciate it. I tried ctrl+C or whatever everything I can think
of but only ctl+alt+delete would work but this is not good because I
cannot save any jobs.
I hope you can reproduce and raise the importance then someone will fix
it ASAP. This is a very serious problem.

I can confirm this problem.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Play a video (format doesn't matter)
2) Drag a *.wmv-file from nautilus and drop it onto the area where the other video is shown

Expected result:
Totem should play the file you just dropped

Actual result:
Totem plays the sound from the new file, but not the video.
The Play-button is disabled, but if you hit Next, the video will play as normal (since in this case the playlist only contains one video)

It is not limited to a specific file. It can happen to any WMV file possibly even AVI file.
If you drug any WMV file and drop into TOTEM, it would happen.
Another case is that when you drug a folder that contains WMV file and drop into TOTEM, Totem would not play either.

I have the same version.
It won't happen every time. It occasionally happens. When you play a movie, do you double-click and play?
If you do, please drug and drop a folder, folders, a file or files to play every time when you play. It will happen.
You may find even worse problem, which is freezing problem.

Omer:
Try to download the wmv file from here (it's a random wmv-file I found via Google):
http://www.archive.org/details/WorkToFishtestwmv
Direct link: http://www.archive.org/download/WorkToFishtestwmv/test_wmv.wmv

Then follow the steps I provided in comment #3.

I forgot to tell one important thing. I have dual monitors. The main monitor is on top of the secondary monitor.
When I click and drug into Totem on the secondary screen, picture shows briefly at the main screen then disappears and no pictures at all on the secondary screen. This may be the reason why many people may not recognized this issue. It may not happen with single screen.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Thank you for trying to take care of this issue. I have greater problem since I updated to 11.04.
After I switch with ctrl+alt+F1 then kill the nautilus. it usually come back but it sometimes reset by itself.
This problem is originally created by Totem but should I report it as a nautilus bug.

Anyway I will check the development release.
