When I disable modeset i.e. boot with radeon.modeset=1, the effects appear to be enabled but are not actually enabled, nothing happens when I try re-enabling the effects, nor restarting X server etc. Please do something fast, it is very irritating unusable.

I have found a temporary workaround for this issue, but am not sure whether this is the fix.

But I don't know how to set LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true for kwin permanently.

But how is it related to posted bug report?
In my case desktop effects were enabled and worked to some extent (they caused screen was flickering as I wrote above)

description: updated
summary: - Screen is flickering with enabled compositiong effects
+ Screen is flickering with enabled compositing effects

Did you try that LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true thing given in the end?
As in your case, my effects were also working but flickered while doing
anything. But using that option fixed the flickering problem, The big reply
by Rog131 in the forum post has given two links in the end which explain the
source of the problem and why it fixes our problem. Don't try the other
unnecessary stuff mentioned for other problems in the post. Just use this
command "LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 kwin --replace"

I tried this variable but after it KDE was slower than normally. Additionally, often fonts in various applications were rendered incorrectly. I also got some graphical glitches here and there on the screen. :(

Hey Wojciech,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)
