Confirming and setting to medium, Denis-André showed me this problem in person. Perhaps the workaround in Bug #292331 may help, but it's fdi file may match other devices so I'd wait to have complete hardware information before suggesting it.

Sorry, HAL is gone in 10.04 LTSso the Bug #292331 will only help partially. We most probably need to craft an udev rule file manually:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Input#Input%20Configuration%20with%20udev%20(Ubuntu%2010.04)

I lack to do this at the moment but if someone else can help be my guest . Otherwise I'll give it a go next week.

The cursor flows around the screen as it should.

Hum? If you see this bug with Ubuntu 11.04, run this command on a terminal: 'ubuntu-bug 657111'. It will attach a number of logfiles to this bugreport. What's difficult about it?

Would it not have been clearer to say that to begin with?

I have NOT installed 11 on this machine nor do I plan! I've 'updated' on
another machine and bitterly regret it! I have to look around for
EVERYTHING! It will be going back to Gnome.

And no, the problem STILL persists, thank you for asking!
