Bug Description
Binary package hint: empathy
In empathy gmail would not connect. After checking I noticed that the Server: line under advanced was blank. I added talk.google.com to it and now it functions correctly.

this bug is fixed in upstream git and upstream developer suggested ubuntu to backport that commit see bug 649561
