Hi Peter, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and help us make Ubuntu better!
Can you elaborate a bit more on "updating a neglected system".
What we need is information to help reproduce this problem. Given that jaunty support will be ended in 3 days, its hard to justify much effort to reproduce the issue, but maybe if you can show the exact sequence that led to this situation, we can reproduce on newer supported releases and fix the issue.
