Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Some days ago, while on a folder display, something went wrong and the icons became mis-aligned. I had to delete all gnome settings and login again to cure the problem. However, the problem is not solved as the attached screenshot will show. Note that now this does not happen with all folders, only some (in fact the screenshot folder is the only one which I have noticed so far with this problem).

Why is this happening?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Let me attempt a more complete description. I was viewing a folder in
Nautilus. This happened to be a network mounted folder mounted via smb4k.

I cannot exactly say why it happened, but the entire icon view became
misaligned. There is an invisible row-column grid in which icons are placed
normally. This causes each icon to be aligned properly on the invisible
grid. The attached screenshot will correctly depict what I consider to be
normally and properly aligned icons inside a nautilus folder view.

Please contrast this with the screenshot I had given earlier where the icons
are not aligned at all.

The two sceenshots should make it clear as to what I am trying to report.

I request this bug to be re-opened. I had supplied information as required. I also want to report that this problem has surfaced once again. Please see the attached screenshots wherein:

1. In one there is no alignment or proper arrangement of the folder icons.

2. In the other the icons are aligned but icon view does not sort the icons according to name as I want it to.

Both problems have no explanation since I have done nothing to change settings. They have happened on their own.

Expected behaviour:

1. All icons should be aligned/arranged properly
2. They should be arranged according to the order specified by user (name/size/date whichever)

I can't figure this out since it has not happened before. Only seems a 10.04 problem

Please re-open this bug or allow me to file a new one with the same report.

Since no solutions seem to exist I have shifted to Xfce4. Fast, light and no problems.
