Bug Description

i can not use the speaker (system bell), this isn't a beep anymore. i REALLY need this because i can not use my hands and this is the unique way to use my PC(using the speaker beeps) .The only way i have is using the "Mouse keys" and "Sticky keys" from the "Accesibility options".I can not hear the beeps of which is the actual function from the sticky keys, the weird think is that this behaviour ain't in the previous versions of ubuntu. there's another trouble, on "sticky keys" if i press (by error) two keys instead of one at a time the tool don't work until i close and open again.

Sorry for my english

Jordan.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test a current, supported, Ubuntu version. If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 642888, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Can you tell us how to reproduce this issue?
Is this issue in Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 10.04?
Do you get any system sounds?

Please do not assign the bug to yourself unless you are going to be developer to fix the issue.

Regards,

Regarding the bug I reported it occurred in version 10.04 and was repeated in version 10.10 of Ubuntu (currently I am on Ubuntu 0.0), I went into preferences tegnologies assistance (accessibility features)

There select Keyboard Accessibility

In the Accessibility tab
<img src="http://www.mispruebas.netai.net/capturas/02.PNG">

Comments on the sound I choose

<img src="http://www.mispruebas.netai.net/capturas/03.PNG">

selected the check box so that by pressing modifier keys beep (bell system) but does not make the sound it should.

I really need that because of the disability, Please find a way to fix it as soon as possible.

Thanks

Thanks for responding on this issue. I do understand how important this can be. I did manage to get the keyboard tones enabled in Ubuntu 10.04. After following what you have already tried, I opened the volume control by clicking on the speaker in the panel, then clicking on "Sound Preferences...". On the Sound Effects tab, which should be the first tab opened, there is "Alert volume:" with a slider that is turned all the way down or left. By moving that slider all the way to the right, the keypresses generate a tone. This does not affect the output volume, which is controlled by the slider in the volume control on the panel. I hope this helps.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Setting high importance per guidelines at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance -
High: A bug which fulfills one of the following criteria:
    * Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users (estimated)
    * Makes a default Ubuntu installation generally unusable for some users

Hello Charlie
I've tested this in Natty and I've observed:
Opening Sound Preference - Alert tone, (hope that is so in English), if move up the volume and press a key noone sound is reproduced, but if we click on on another tone, the theme is switched from Ubuntu to Personalized.
Now we press the initial of one of the tone and it is reproduced, highligted but not selected, and appear the box of the typed letter.
If we press another time the initial of the Tone before the letter box is desappeared no sound is reproduced, but if we wait that this box disappear we can press and hear again the tone sound.
Hope it helps
Fabio

Dear Members!
PC Beep works for me on Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.10. It doesn't work on UBUNTU 11.04. I try to work around but:

A Bug #91681 (gnome-alsamixer fails with SIGSEGV) also affects me.
Maybe the same reason - ???
(A copy of this message posted to a Bug #91681)
Also alsamixer failed:

~$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

I try different mixers with the same result.
I create ~/bark.wav 48000 Hz, 24 bit stereo.

aplay -q "~/bark.wav"
ALSA lib confmisc.c:768:(parse_card) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:4184:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such file or directory

ALSA lib pcm.c:2212:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
aplay: main:660: помилка відкриття аудіо: No such file or directory

Maybe the same problem.
I try different sound cards with the same result: embedded snd-hda-intel, USB Juster sound card and USB speakers Logitech S-150. Sound Properties from System Preferences, Video Player, sounds of dialogues are works normally.

Other programs (non-Ubuntu) similar failures trying to play any sound:

KWave: plays a dialogue sound and shows a message:
Openning the device 'default' failed: No such file or directory

Rezound can not play with message:
Error: void CSoundPlayerChannel::play(sample_pos_t, CSoundPlayerChannel::LoopTypes, bool) -- the soun player is not initialized.

The best regards.
Viktor
