Bug Description

When adding a printer, in the second step it is presented to me a dropdown menu with some printer manufacturers. There, Konica Minolta is named twice: once as "KonicaMinolta" and then as "Minolta".

Furthermore, some printers like "magicolor 2430 DL" are filled in both "KonicaMinolta" and "Minolta".

I am running Ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10 Beta from the live-CD.

The problem is that there are 2 printers magicolor 2430 DL which are not compatible, the PPD for the older model is located under Minolta and the PPD for the newer model is located under KonicaMinolta.

According to http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=KonicaMinolta-magicolor_2430_DL:
Note that the older Minolta magicolor 2430 DL and the newer Konica Minolta magicolor 2430 DL are not 100% equal. So it is not sure whether the Minolta magicolor 2430 DL perhaps also works with the driver from Konica Minolta.

Konica Minolta also provides the rastertokmXXXXdl driver for newer printer models. This driver is released under the GPL, it would be nice if somebody could package this driver for Ubuntu.

I still see this problem with system-config-printer in Gutsy. Not sure even this is the correct package for this bug though.

Thanks for cleaning up g-c-m bugs Henrik.
The correct package for this bug is foomatic-db, reassigning.
Marking this bug as "Won't fix" since the duplicate naming is intentional to differentiate between older and newer models, as described before.

I have found two problems now:

1. Upstream bug in foo2zjs: The PPDs in foo2zjs have "KonikaMinolta" as manufacturer name whereas foomatic-db has the correct "KONICA MINOLTA".

2. Upstream bug in system-config-printer: The space is in the manufacturer name is not handled correctly. Printers with manufacturer name "KONICA MINOLTA" appear as manufacturer "KONICA", model "MINOLTA ...".

3. Upstream bug in cupsys: PPDs for KONICA MINOLTA PostScript printers are correctly listed by "lpinfo -m" but they do not appear in the CUPS web interface.

foomatic-db does not provide any of the non-PostScript printer/driver entries in question and can so not be cause of this bug. All the entries come from Ready-made PPDs coming with driver packages. The PostScript printer PPDs coming with foomatic-db are all OK

This bug was fixed in the package system-config-printer - 0.7.78+svn1799-0ubuntu1

---------------
system-config-printer (0.7.78+svn1799-0ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low

  * New upstream release
     o Subversion snapshot r1799
     o Made assignment of PPDs to auto-detected printers more reliable,
       especially for Bluetooth and network printers. This is done by
       supporting weird auto-detection output of CUPS backends, as
       "Unknown" for make and model but useful info field, device ID
       for Bluetooth not identical with device ID for USB/parallel, no
       manufacturer name in make-and-model field, case-insensitive search
       when cleaning model name.
     o Handle the manufacturer name "KONICA MINOLTA" correctly (LP: #64046).
     o If the OpenPrinting database (foomatic-db) recommends a non-PostScript
       driver, use this driver, even if there is a vendor PPD for the
       PostScript mode (HP LaserJet 12xx/13xx, LP: #172550).
     o Allow listing of all files in file chooser dialog for selecting a
       custom PPD file (LP: #153585).
  * debian/control: Added missing dependencies: python-gnome2 and
    gnome-icon-theme (LP: #176929).
