Bug Description

Binary package hint: bandwidthd

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Bandwidthd is always seen in the update manager and whenever i try to download the package i get the following message - E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bandwidthd_2.0.1+cvs20090917-3_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2

Unable to install or upgrade the package. On attempting to remove package through synaptic package manager I get the message that the package is in a bad inconsistent state and hence need to be reinstalled. Since I am not able to reinstall it I am caught in a vicious circle. Though i do not miss anything due to bug in the package. I am not able to download VLC media player as it seems to be dependent on Bandwithd.

I am also attaching the term.log file. I am doing so as I had come across in some forum,

Sorry for the delay in getting this information to you.

Initially the installation was started from the web however, the system did
suggest that i should install from within Ubuntu as the application already
existed under Ubuntu software centre. As far as i can remember, this went
through, and I'm sure that it did actually run the software, but I'm not
sure.

Typing 'apt-cache policy bandwidthd' shows:-

Bandwidthd:
    Installed: 2.0.1
    Candidate: 2.0.1+CVS20090917-3
    Version Table:
          2.0.1+CVS20090917-3 0
          500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/universe packages
***2.0.1.0
       100/var/lib/dpkg/status

I am very new to the world of Linux so this is all very new to me.

Kind Regards

Thanks for the reply, I checked the homepage and indeed the version 2.0.1 there contains a buggy init script. I've attached a correct version of the script, please replace /etc/init.d/bandwithd with the one attached to this report by me.

I'm closing this report as invalid as we cannot be responsible for bugs introduced by non-ubuntu packages.
