Bug Description

With both the CD-RW and a DVD-ROM drive, which otherwise work perfectly (up to and including mounting and reading DVD videos), when an audio CD is inserted, after a little activity, is not mounted in Ubuntu 10.4. It goes so far as to even "remove" the drive references from the computer. (the CD-ROM device icons disappear from all applications including nautilus.)

I managed to force some audio out through Totem by referencing dev/sc0 although it was very broken and slow. I believe that was forcing Raw digital audio reading though. Could not be counted as working.

The audio CDs are all genuine non-modern (no recent copy protect methods) CDs, as was my initial fear. I tested with over a dozen known to be working CDs that I had imported in Ubuntu on a previous machine with 8.04.

Hi Dogma,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Tried new Kernel linux-image-2.6.36-999-generic_2.6.36-999.201009200905_i386.deb - no change in CD activity. As a side, a number of Errors scroll by at start up if an Audio CD is left in one of the drives. I'll try and make a note of a few at next boot.

It is similar - however as that bug has been closed as incomplete - it is still an issue for a few users at least. IMHO it may be a far greater issue - I have seen many off-launchpad forums and posts that relate to this. It may be something that prevents some users using Ubuntu/Linux as it does not provide them with a fully functional desktop replacement OS.

On a further testing note - I tried the machine with a Geexbox Live CD I had lying about and it played the Audio CDs fine - not sure if it streams it direct or some method unconventional to regular Linux, but as it worked I thought it'd be worth mentioning.
