Bug Description

Ubuntu error report:

I am running Ubuntu v6.06 LTS. I just have to congratuations on a wonderful operating system. I just can't get enough of it - however I have spotted an error.

The screen saver regularly crashes the computer. It locks up the screen, no activity from the screen saver and the mouse pointer freezes. I have to reset and reboot.

It seems to have a problem when making selection between screensavers. This occurs when selecting the screen saver you want in System->Prefrences->Screensaver. I also can't run random screensaver selection.

I have a Gigabyte K8 Triton GA-K8VM800M mother board (rev 2) with 512MB of ram and an AMD Sempron 2.8GHz CPU. The whole computer is not that old (two months) and I haven't noticed any hardware errors.

It didn't crash with the previous version 5 of Ubuntu.

Thanks for the bug report Mike.

Do you know what video card is on your computer?
From what you are describing, it sounds like your video card may not be setup properly. Also, was this experienced on a clean install of dapper, or did you dist-upgrade from breezy?

OK Mike, I think I have found the problem. After some Googling and searching on Launchpad, it seems that the VIA K8M800 chipset doesn't want to play nice with the provided VIA video driver. This is more than likely caused by VIA's reluctance to provide specs of the chipset to open source developers. In that regard, there is really nothing anyone can do about it.

However, it does seem you aren't the only one with these problems. Bugs #57062 and #43154 also document problems with this VIA chipset. There is also an upstream bug filed on freedesktop.org.

Sorry you had such rotten luck, hopefully a fix will be resolved soon.

Hey Mike, its me again.

You've probably seen that there are multiple bug reports for this issue with the K8M800 VIA chipset. To make life easier for the Ubuntu bug squashers, I'm going to mark this report as a duplicate of bug #43154. If you like, you can stay subscribed to that bug for any signs of progress. Hope you can get the issue resolved soon.

Cheers and Good Luck!!!
