This is happening on lots of packages, the /var/lib/dpkg/updates/* that it's complaining about don't seem to be the original control files but they appear to be temporaries.

For example it did it on 'mc' for me and the 0002 file shows:

dg@major:/tmp/updates$ more 0002
Package: mc
Status: install reinstreq half-installed
Priority: optional
Section: utils
Version: 3:4.7.0.6-1
Triggers-Awaited: doc-base
dg@major:/tmp/updates$

Since the above reporter said this occurs on a lot of packages, I'm closing the banshee task. Feel free to re-open it if you find that it also affects Banshee.

This bug was fixed in the package dpkg - 1.15.8.4ubuntu2

---------------
dpkg (1.15.8.4ubuntu2) maverick; urgency=low

  * Backport from sid branch (Guillem Jover):
    - Do not print a warning when parsing status or status log files on
half-installed packages w/o a Description or Maintainer field, as this
happens normally when the package was never installed before
      (LP: #619135).
