Bug Description

Alan <email address hidden> in comp.emacs.xemacs (2010-01-25)

I upgraded to the latest VM version available via the XEmacs package
system. Function "vm-version" says that is version "8.0.12-
devo-585" (8.07 on the package list). This VM version via the XEmacs
package system has no Info files (or texinfo files) that come with it
(they are not on the manifest list).

Having just downloaded the VM package, I find the same issue.

This seems to be long-standing problem with the build routine. The configure script shows:

checking where .elc files should go... $(prefix)/lib/xemacs/site-packages/lisp/vm
checking where pixmaps should go... $(prefix)/lib/vm
checking which options to pass on to (X)Emacs... -batch -no-autoloads -l $(srcdir)/vm-build.el
checking where the TeXinfo docs should go... ${datarootdir}/info

The pixmaps are not going to site-packages/etc and the info is not going to site-packages/info.

I don't know if this ever worked!

Please don't subscribe me to VM bugs, I'm not the XEmacs package maintainer.

If XEmacs packaging is involved, feel free to add a bug to the XEmacs tracker
(see http://tracker.xemacs.org/XEmacs/its/issue727 = this bug, for an example
format). This can be done by mail, by mailing <email address hidden>
with the first non-whitespace text in subject "[issue]", or by web if you have a
user on the XEmacs tracker. Or you can use report-xemacs-bug, if you use
XEmacs.

Maybe it would be useful to have vm-submit-bug-report automatically copy
the XEmacs tracker. If interested, let me know.

No, no you're not. I am. Your role as the XEmacs Beta Engineer is much
more suited to providing continous and timely stable releases of the highly volatile
XEmacs codebase to the greater XEmacs user community. Thank you for
reminding us though.

Nega, did the problem appear in your recent build of the xemacs package?

Yeah. The bug report surprised me because I swear I've read the info file out of pkgs before.

It shouldn't be a difficult fix. Whatever I send to the package manager will have the info file included. The pkg users will probably have to rebuild their info dirs on their own.

I had hoped to have something pushed upstream this week. But it's been a week of long nights, and I plan to stay far away from the computer this weekend :)

Dear Nega, are you online? Can you check the current alpha release of 8.2.0a and see whether it works correctly on XEmas with regard to these issues?

Cheers,
Uday

Julian, this bug should have been fixed in the 8.2.0a release, but I need some XEmacs user to check that it is working fine. Will you be able to do that?

Ulrich writes (in Bug 612222):

P.S.: Another thing that I've noticed, the top-level Makefile.in
contains the following lines for the xemacs-package target:

        cd info; make infodir=$(PKGDIR)/info install-pkg
        cd src; make infodir=$(PKGDIR)/bin install-pkg

The second line looks wrong to me. It's like this since 2007 [1]
though, and I'm not sure what's intended. Probably we need an XEmacs
person to check this.

I'll look at this when I can. Unfortunately, it requires finding out something about XEmacs packages, a topic on which I've hitherto managed to remain blissfully ignorant.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/vm/+bug/784623/comments/2 addresses Comment #10.

It looks like the Ubuntu pkg of VM vm-8.2.0b-1 and greater include NEWS. I'd assume this is upstream in debian too.
