toshiba laptop no fan overheat

Bug Description

My laptop model is a TOSHIBA SATELLITE PRO P100 PSPA4E
I have tried using versions from Hardy Heron onwards, and the problem remains identical.
I have logged a new bug for this, as none of the others fit exactly.

The problem is as follows:

When I turn on the laptop, I can hear and feel that the fan is working fine (just like it did under Win XP, so I know it's not physically broken or full of dust). However, as soon as Lucid Lynx starts to load, the fan stops. It then stays off and the laptop becomes very, very hot.

I have tried "this works for me" fixes that seem to have done something for others models of laptop (like suspending and resuming, or changing the BIOS fan setting from SILENT to PERFORMANCE and back again) but to no avail.

I thought if I logged a bug report myself, I could then take responsibility for providing any and all information you might need from me to try and help you help me.

I am not very technical, but will follow any instructions you give me to the letter.

Thank you.
David

Hi david,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 609875

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeremy.

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm not all that technical I'm sorry to say,
but I will help as much as I can.

The first action on me is to test the latest development release of Ubuntu.
By that, do you mean Maverick Meerkat? If you do, does it make a
difference to you if I burn a new ISO of it and do a fresh install, or is it
better I just upgrade my Lucid Linx installation by bringing it down from
the repositories?

Please let me know if this is correct, and I will make sure I do that before
we move onto the next steps - where I will have more questions I'm sure.

Thanks,
Dave.

OK Jeremy, I've tried it on Meerkat, and the problem with the overheating is
still there for certain.

I've also run the apport as requested.

I'm afraid the "upstream kernel testing" is beyond me at the moment, my
sight isn't too good and i'm not technical at all.

Hope what you have so far is enough to progress things.

Thanks for your help,
cheers,Dave.

Hi Jeremy,

I don't know if this helps or not, but.... I installed Meerkat as you
requested, and after confirming the problem still existed and running
Apport, I re-installed from scratch using my Lynx ISO to revert me to a
stable release. As part of my post-install routine, I got the usual
notification to install restricted Nvidia drivers, which I did. However,
during the automatic downloading and installing of those drivers, the fan
seemed to kick in briefly at quite high speed. Following the installation,
it reverted to not working and haven't shown any signs of cooling since.
