vm-auto-get-new-mail stops automatically retrieving new mail

I have vm-auto-get-new-mail set to 60, and mail is automatically retrieved for some time, but after a while it just stops doing it. I can still get mail of course with 'g', but that does not reset the timer. Has anyone else seen this behavior? running VM8.1.0 in GNU Emacs 23.1.1 using POP protocol

After you think it stopped, can you check the variable `timer-list'
and tell me what it has?

It has stopped in my work email (which I generally have up for a long time in
emacs daemon mode). Here is the current value of timer-list:
