Bug Description

I'm using testdrive to test the latest maverick ISOs using virtualbox 3.2 as my test environment.

I've noticed that from inception to now (post alpha-2), the netbook ISO fails at the point of loading the desktop GUI.
I've been unsuccessful in switching to a virtual console in the guest environment to try and look at the logs, so if someone can give me some pointers on doing this I can probably add more information to the bug.

I suspect this may be a duplicate, however I searched on launchpad several times for this bug and the search continually timed out.

Basically the gui starts, but no netbook menu loads, so I'm left with a blank destop with a mouse cursor (which responds). I can do an ACPI shutdown and the guest VM responds with a shutdown menu which I can navigate with the keypad. The system will then shut down.

it seems unity does not work in virtualbox as someone at IRC yesterday had the exact problem. I have not tried virtualbox but is it capable enough to run a 3d environment?

It is definitely capable of running a 3d environment as a guest. I'm using the ubuntu testdrive tool to do testing of daily ISOs so I'm not certain what parameters that testdrive passes to virtualbox in respect to enabling 3D effects.

I can try to manually set up a virtualbox guest with 3d-parameters and see if the ISO will boot.

I set up a guest machine with 3D features enabled. The ISO boots but still fails at loading the unity desktop environment.

I also burned today's daily ISO to a USB stick to see if it was the VM or the ISO. The ISO wouldn't even boot, freezing at the grub boot: prompt with an "unknown keyword in configuration file" error.

I get a bit further with unetbootin, but am dumped to busybox prompt as the splash screen tries to load.
This is on the daily netbook i386 ISO from 25/7/10.

I was able to boot into root prompt using recovery mode and start X from there. 3D acceleration in the guest is reported as enabled and glxinfo reports another driver different form Mesa software (glxinfo output attached).

Once there i try to execute unity and get the following output:
OpenGL Warning: glXChooseFBConfigSGIX not implemented by Chromium
Segmentation fault
