Bug Description

First, go make yourselef a coffee this is a really long story :)

It all begain when I first installed Lucid Lynx, right after the first logon I knew that there's something wrong
The keyboard was inrepsonsive and later on the mouse quit working as well

I was suggested to turn the ACPI feature off by adding 'acpi=off' to the kernel line in grub, after doing that everything worked fine besides the computer was pretty sluggish, a quick look at the system monitor showed that one of my CPUs is missing (I also checked cat /proc/cpuinfo - same conclusion), The computer was too sluggish to work with

So I tried another method, I changed the 'acpi=off' at the kernel line to noapic, my processor got back but the PrintScreen/Break key halted my CPU, after pressing it few times in a row the computer restarted... (sometimes while typing I accidently pressed the button and the computer freezed, can't tell you how frustrating it is...)

(After that I tried 'nolapic' but although the mouse and keyboard was working I was still missing a CPU)

In the meantime I started hearing all sorts of beeps from my computer, I check to see if there's a pcspkr module but it wasn't on... apparently the beeps are coming out of my headphones (I don't have speakers), at first I heard beeps whenever I tried to use my browser in order to visit a crowded webpage, as I was scrolling I heard those irritating beeps, at a normal usage nothing happened

After 1 kernel update from Canonical (to 2.6.32.23.24) and 2 unstable updates (2.6.35 for Lucid from kernel.ubuntu.com and 2.6.32ck with bfs from a launchpad ppa) the beeps went even worse, and it didn't matter what kernel I chose the computer was beeping all the time (randomly)

Few days later the beeps were still driving me nuts but now I wasn't even at the computer... I tried to get some sleep and the beeps drove my insane (I shut it down, don't worry), the next day I tried to look further into the problem and loaded my XP to see what may be the cause of the problem and if its hardware or software related, at first while working with XP there were beeps but few hours later the beeps stopped completely (In the meanwhile there were several beeps but not many until they completely stopped), so I decided to get back to my beloved ubuntu and guess what? the frequency is not as it used to but the beeps are back! once again!

Now I'm working with Ubuntu, I still get these beeps whenever I'm on the computer, hoping that te situation will not get any worse than that (I'm sceptic for now)

My motherboard is ASUS P48X-X with 1005.01 bios update (beta version)
The 'acpi=off'/'noapic'/'nolapic' issue is discussed over here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-keyboard/+bug/555169

(Currently I was the last to comment on this issue)
The first one has got to be a xserver issue as I this bug report suggests but I truly believe that the beeps are kernel related

I would love to add any details as necessary (I was told to add some acpi info but I need more precise info about what info is actually needed)

Kind regards,
Yaron Shahrabani

Hardware problem, not linux related
