Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

I am a newbie using 9.1 with no problem. Using synpac updates I am up to date and tried to upgrade. The upgrade to 10.4 downloade fine but on re booting the logo and flashing dots appeared and then a flash of colour followed by a blank screen.
As I was going for a full install I had no option but to re install 9.1. I also obtained a new 10.4 LTS distro from a friend, tried that but with the same result.

I just attempted to do a fresh install on a system with a similar chipset and found this page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes

Apparently, this is a known issue. Using the first workaround worked perfectly. Append the kernel command line parameter 'i915.modeset=1' and all is well.

Thanks I tried first work round all seemed ok until terminal asked for
my sudo password. As a newbie to ubuntu can you advise how to find
this. My normal log password did not work.

sudo only ever asks for your password. When the prompt says '[sudo] password for ubuser:', it wants the password for the user ubuser.

So, in a terminal, you entered 'echo options i915 modeset=1 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf' (without the quotes, of course), entered your password at the sudo password prompt and it refused it, prompting you again? I've never seen it refuse a correct password. I'd suggest checking your NumLock and CapsLock to ensure that they are the way you expect them when typing in your password (normally NumLock on and CapsLock off).

A quick test is in a terminal type 'sudo echo password-worked' (you may substitute "password-worked" for any string you like) and it should say "password-worked" then return you to the normal command prompt.
