Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

I want to use Empathy as a chat client. I already have a Google account with chat available so I just want to access it using Empathy.
1.) I click on the envelope icon and then on the "chat".
2.) I choose the first possibility: "Yes, I'll enter my account ..." and click on Forward.
3.) In next step of the wizard I choose Google Talk, enter my Google ID and password and choose "No, that's all for now." Then I click on Forward.
4.) Then two windows are opened: a bigger one where I should enter my personal details. However this window immediately becomes inaccessible because it is overlayed by the smaller second window with title "Unlock Login Keyring" and the prompt "Enter password to unlock your login keyring" and with an explanation "The password you use to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your login keyring".

While there is the second window opened I can not do anything else, only to give password (which always is refused as an incorrect one) or to close (cancel) the window.

I have no idea how to resolve this problem. Truly speaking, I do not know what the Login keyring is and why one should bother about it when using Empathy to connect to an already existing Google account.

I have two passwords on the machine: that of me (used for administration too, via sudo) and the traditional root account. Neither of these two passwords is accepted by Empathy. I do not know or do not remember about any other password on the machine. One time I was faced with a "Login keyring" prompt (to enter a password) when configuring a mobile network connection. But I do not remember if it was on current system or not.

And now perhaps an important information: My user account is not of the default type arranged by ubuntu during installation. After installation I changed my group name (from konopka to users) and group ID (now it is 100). I deleted my original group konopka (same as my username) because I no longer needed it. Everything works OK except that I am now having the problem with the login keyring when configuring Empathy. However I think that the fact that I am memeber of the "users" group (I do not have my "own" group) should not prevent me from using Empathy.

this is not a bug of empathy apparently it sounds like you forgot your password for the keyring. you can reset it by

$ rm ~/.gnome2/keyrings/default.keyring

and then reboot.

Yes, deleting the ~/.gnome2/keyrings directory solved my problem. Thanks.

This is not invalid. Upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04, I received the same problem. As far as I am aware, I never used the keyring under 8.04. Thus, I do not have any passwords in my keyring that I care about, and can use the destructive fix listed here. However, it is worth noting that I did not forget any passwords. I have a limited set of passwords to draw from, and none of those work. Whatever the password of my keyring is, it is in no way associated with my current or former credentials.

Being forced to do "rm -rf ~/.gnome2/keyrings" before I can use the new 10.04 chat client seems like a bit of a hack. If this is going to happen to everyone, or perhaps everyone that never used keyring?, that directory should be wiped by default on upgrade.

this bug has nothing to do with empathy. i would say the password changes or someone changed it. in any case I am closing this bug.
