Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Sometimes (more or less once every 3 boots, but sometimes keeps happening for few times in a row) the GDM service doesn't start and Ubuntu displays the text mode login prompt.
When this happens the splash screen doesn't appears, but if I press CTRL+ALT+DELETE then the splash screen that indicates the shutdown appears.

When the text mode login prompt appears I can login and I can launch GDM with "sudo service gdm start", and the service starts normally and the graphic login screen is shown.

The problem is new to 10.04 since with 9.10 the gdm service started correctly every time.

This looks like a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/581302 but I don't want to mark it because I'm afraid that will force it to expire early. This bug has not been resolved.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

The bug seems gone in 11.04, but I have changed the graphic driver from
NOUVEAU to the NVidia blob.
I think I didn't change the default driver after installing 10.04

I will download 11.10 alpha and try the live cd (I cannot do a full install
because it would cause an huge disruption)
