Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Ubuntu Luci Lynx 10.04
xserver-xorg
X cannot start. It simply turns off the monitor.
I can only get to X by harware reboot, enter in recovery mode and from there in safe graphics mode.

In safe graphics mode, please try disabling Desktop Effects (compiz) in System->Preferences->Appearance->Effects (Tab).

Desktop Effects is already disabled. Should I remove compiz?

No, that's fine.

Hold down Shift while booting to get to grub. Then press 'e' and replace
"quiet splash" with "nomodeset". Ctrl+x to boot. If that doesn't work try
"noacpi" or "noapic".

Boot with nomodeset makes X function. But I cannot initially see the mouse pointer, it appears after two or three minutes; later on, and after a few minutes of no activity, the desktop session unexpectedly closes itself, without warning, showing the login screen.

Please try the current mainline kernel:

I've followed the link and tried several times to install a correct mainline kernel, but after days of reading and testing I keep failing to do so, constantly receiving a "wrong architecture" message, both on the i386 version and the AMD64; and I still can't make X work normally. I give up: many thanks for your help.

Sorry, the process can be a bit confusing if you're not used to it. To install the current mainline kernel:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc3-maverick/
Download the _all headers, the i386 headers, and the i386 kernel, and then install them in that order by double-clicking them. You should then be able to select it in grub (hold down Shift while booting to get there).

You should also try the xorg-edgers PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
To install:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo apt-get upgrade
To revert:
sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers

Many thanks for the tip. I've finally managed to install the mainline kernel. However, it does not solve the problem, or, to be specific, regenerates an old one: I can login now, but X stops abruptly without warning, showing a black screen with the following message: "the screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly". I can only log back in safe graphics mode, and all session data is lost. I had previously filed that same behavior here in launchpad under bug #579653, before I experienced bug #586090 (this one we're working on).
Since a proposed solution for bug #579653 was also to install the mainline kernel, I'll file the results there too. Thanks again.
