Thank you for the fast reply and assistance. Does anyone know if making the updates to the packages detailed in my first post will break Dapper Drake or KDE? I've got a spare machine I can try it on if necessary.

The Sourceforge faq http://baghira.sourceforge.net/faq.php#006.faq seems to
explain the cause so well that I'll probably just make the updates detailed
in my first post, on my K7 test computer, and see what happens.
