Bug Description

When using Ubuntu with Thinkpads (T41 & T60) Ubuntu overheats the system.

On the T60 the system will not boot when the system (I think it is the graphics chip) is warm; you have to wait for it to cool down.

This system gets so hot it burns my legs.

Using Centrino chipsets on both (Centrino on T41, Centrino Duo on T60).

This is a fully patched T60 with Lucid - fresh install. Have had similar issues on previous versions...

The heat could probably shorten the system life - it is that excessive. and this is not under much load. CPU state panel applet says 54% / 1Ghz.

Usually just running Chromium ( but similar with Firefox), Pidgin

When playingback web videos the system gets so hot it shuts down. Fan speed doesn't seem to change. There are lots of reports on this on the web, but no real answers.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it without more information.

Please run the following command which will attach necessary information:

apport-collect 584211

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot richard.

Now please type this on your terminal:

( cd /proc/acpi/thermal_zone && \
while :; do \
  line="`date`:`grep temperature */* | awk '{ printf(\" %03d\", $2) }'`"; \
  echo "$line"; \
  sleep 10; \
done ) | tee LOG

This will create a file called LOG with the temperatures of your machine over time. And please attach that LOG file.

For your reference, you can take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/HighTemperatures

Hi,

Please find attached two files.
The first one did not shut down when it hit a peak of 097; the system was hot to the touch and you couldnt compfortably rest hands on the keyboard; let alone having it resting on your lap.

The fans didnt speed up during this temperature peak (or at all); this was while watching flash videos in VLC.

The second file was a restart (after it had cooled - the system wont boot when warm - it hangs on a flashing cursor in the top left corner). this time I had gmail open in chrome and open office open with a 20page document and a small spreadsheet... it closed down while much cooler; but still hot being in the eighties.

in both cases pidgin was running in the background.

here is the process list of the system as I am writing this is attached as well.

I noticed from your lspci.txt that you have an ATI M52 (Mobility Radeon X1300).

The situation should be greatly improved in kernel 2.6.35. See http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODE5Mg and http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODIyOA

This kernel is being used in the upcoming Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat". If you want to try this on Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx", a PPA of kernel 2.6.35-rc6 can be found at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

The final version of kernel 2.6.35 should be available soon.

ok, I would like to try. How can I add this PPA so it stays up to date
with later RCs of the kernel. I assume the kernel will never reach
Lucid. How can it be installed without ruining upgrade-ability to
Maverick?

The link takes me a web page; I have looked at the PPA documentation
and there isnt an explanaltion of how to add a PPA with a link like
this. should I just add this to the sources.list file as with earlier
versions of Ubuntu?

somehting like:
deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ lucid main
deb-src http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ lucid main

I cannot see a (user/consumer friendly) implemented feature list for
Maverick; is Maverick ok for light PC use; should I just upgrade to
that now (I have previously run Alphas and Betas of
Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu without many issues).

richard, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/PowerManagementASPM a patch has been issued to address overheats. Could you please try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
