Bug Description

Hello,

normally I use my ProBook 6545b without the battery, just with the AC/DC-adapter. But when I want to insert the battery and plug off the adapter (on changing the room) the mouse cursor will be like frozen before the screen turns black and the system will reboot.
The issue only occurs when using the Ubuntu specific kernel of 2.6.32, which is used by Lucid.
It didn't occur when using the mainline-kernel 2.6.32 or the previous version of Ubuntu.
Please help me with finding the bug. If you have any code to test on my specific machine, let me know.
Thank you.

Marco

Hi marco,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

are mainline-kernels and upstream-kernels the same? I tested it with
2.6.32 but I could also test it 2.6.34, which released yesterday I
think. I also have some basic developing skills with C++ and some C so I
could test some pieces of code on my machine.

Thank you for looking for a solution.

Hello,

I tried to compile several kernels from kernel.org with debian methods. After that I tried to let them run under Ubuntu. All of 2.6.32 have this problem. Yesterday I installed Debian 5.0 and 2.6.32 on this OS. Butt as often I tried - this error does not occur.

Exactly the same problem here, running linux-image-2.6.32-24-generid on amd64 host. Each I unplug the powercord, the HDD light blink and the system is completly frozen, reboot is needed. I also notice that if I power on the system witouth the network card plug, I must reboot the system to see the interface. I use Ubuntu for more than 5 years in my daily job, but this is the first time that I have so much critical problems.

Did you also try to figure out if this error occurs with Debian and a
new kernel? The kernel itself is really stable although there's a new
release every 2-3 months.
I tried to install many different Linux kernel, because I first thought
that the error is a kernel problem but than I figured out that the
problem is Ubuntu specific.
I used another partition to install Debian Lenny on it. Then I installed
a self compiled kernel from kernel.org to install it on Lucid and Lenny.
As it seemed to work properly with Lenny and while the same error
occurred with Lucid I knew that the problem is at Lucid.
This week after checking for new updates I found and update for
acpi-support. That made me watching more.
After reading the changelog
<https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/0.136.1> and I
thought that this may also fix my problem. So I downloaded the source
and tried to add those pieces of code which were added to
/etc/acpi/power.sh. To ensure that the new pieces of code will be used,
I restarted the system and tried to plug in the battery an plug of the
AC/DC-Adapter. The system did like it did before.
Now, after installing the whole update I try again and will post this here.
