Suspend/resume fails on Acer Aspire 1692

Bug Description

After a suspend, touching a key will restart the fans and there's disk activity, but the screen remains blank and there's no reaction to key presses (CapsLock won't toggle the led).

This is a fresh install of Lucid Lynx 10.04, not an upgrade. Suspend/resume has worked on this machine with several previous versions of Ubuntu. The latest I had installed was 8.04.

Bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/426418
could be related, but I was instructed to file a new one.

Hi João,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I have the same computer, Suspend/Resume and Hibernate worked on Ubuntu 9.10.

I have tested both kernels 2.6.32-0206321304-generic (latest 2.6.32 kernel) and 2.6.34-020634rc7-generic (latest kernel available)

 results :
 * for 2.6.32-0206321304-generic -- linux-image-2.6.32-0206321304-generic_2.6.32-0206321304_i386.deb
same result as for kernel 2.6.32-22-generic (with or without pae), blank screen, no reaction

 * for 2.6.34-020634rc7-generic -- linux-image-2.6.34-020634rc7-generic_2.6.34-020634rc7_i386.deb
goes out of suspend, but there are artefact's on the screen witch makes it unusable (seems like synchronization issue)
the system is up and running (I was able to ssh my computer to reboot it...)

Hi,

I did also test the newest 2.6.34-020634-generic (linux-image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386.deb) kernel and it has the same problem than 2.6.34-020634rc7-generic. But I think that those two issues are not related. I think the bug in the 2.6.32 is not the same (total freeze of the computer) as the bug in the 2.6.34 (radeon graphic driver bug).

I've installed mainline kernel
  linux-image-2.6.32-02063211-generic_2.6.32-02063211_i386.deb
and rebooted.
Tried a suspend and resume shows same symptoms as originally reported: no screen, no reaction.

I've also tried kernel
  linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201005181210_i386.deb
and had symptoms similar to what adline reported above:
system seems to resume, but the screen shows alternating patterns of horizontal lines or random dots. Tried to switch to other consoles (Alt-F1) but the screen remained unintelligible. There is reaction to CapsLock, and I was able to use Alt-SysRq key combinations to terminate/sync/reboot.

I'm just reporting that the issue is still there with Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-24-generic-pae.

I believe this has been confirmed by others. Should I report upstream?

Anyone had better luck?

João

Hi,
I am experiencing this bug too, with an Acer Aspire 1692 ; the kernel is 2.6.32.24-generic-pae from an up to date 10.04
Note that:
- the computer seems to boot correctly, since doing blindly : Alt-F1 + <login> + <pwd> + sudo -s + <pwd> + reboot
successfully reboots the machine in a normal state
- Alt-SysRq+K seems to work correctly according to disk / wifi activity but the blank screen remains
=> seems to confirm that this is a graphic related bug

(BTW, resume from hibernate works correctly but is triggered automatically right after hibernating
(without doing anything) which makes the feature useless...)

Cheers

Fred

The bug seems to be related (duplicate? ) of #434956
in my case,
> with xserver-xorg-video-ati = 6.13.0-1ubuntu5
when booting with default options (radeon.modeset=1) i get this bug
when booting with radeon.modeset=0 the x server fails with 'couldn't find valid pll dividers'

> with xserver-xorg-video-ati = 6.13.1-1ubuntu1~xup3~lucid
when booting with default options (radeon.modeset=1) i get this same bug
when booting with radeon.modeset=0 the x server starts but 'suspend' results on locking the display (screensaver) and blanking the screen (reverted by ctrl-alt-f1 / ctrl-alt-f7)
