Seems to be related to an outdated gcc version.
Maybe gcc 3.* is the default on your system?

No, a gcc --v gives:-

gcc version 4.2.1 (Based on Apple Inc. build 5658)

Though this might have been updated since the bug last occurred. I installed
the deb package from the website manually, then was able to remove the apt
package successfully, which seems to have resolved my problems, however that
is obviously a bit of a work-around.

In October of this year I successfully compiled VirtualBox-OSE 3.2.10 from source in Maverick (~kernel 2.6.35-22.33) following the instructions found at http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux%20build%20instructions. Despite this, if you insist on compiling new(er) versions of VirtualBox on old kernels, feel free to link the upstream bug about this issue found at: http://www.virtualbox.org/query?status=new&status=assigned&status=reopened&host=Linux&order=priority or if not found create a new upstream bug via http://www.virtualbox.org/newticket and toggle this bug's Status to Confirmed.

Hi,

Thanks, but in fact the only effort I put into this bug was to report
it when it occurred on my system, so can't say I've really contributed
anything :)

This bug occurred with the latest version of virtualbox installed via
aptitude, however I eventually worked around it by doing exactly what
you reference, i.e. compiling from source.
