Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. By "shut down" do you mean that Firefox is crashing?

Sorry I am at idiot level with computers. While on Firefox, the screen will suddenly go black. When I hit a key, it will ask for password and when entered it will go back to desktop. When Firefox is open again, it will say sorry and have last location when crash happened. It also give option to start new session.

Thanks for the clarification. Could you let us know what brand of graphics card you are using? If you are unsure, you can open a terminal and run the following command:

lspci | grep VGA

Could you please generate an apport crash report for this?
You can enable apport for one instance like this:
sudo service apport start force_start=1

I am marking this invalid as apport will open a new bug when the crash is generated. If it does not, you can reset the status of this one to New and we will try something else.

Changed in firefox (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Invalid
