Bug Description

remix 10.04 installed as wubi
no DHCP
configured eth0 with DNS IP-adresses, but no DNS available for IP-traffic.

I found a work-around :
in /etc/network/interfaces add eth0 to the auto-line
and
make interfaces managed by changing /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, set
managed=true under the ifupdown-section
then restart.
(The doc says that you should run killall nm-system-settings, but that doesn't work.)

Reassigning to Ubuntu package network-manager, since this seems to be what is affected.

gerti,

Could you please add some more information to your bug report? I would like to know what you mean by "no DHCP". Is it that there is no DHCP server available, or is it that your computer does not get a response? Also, as you set up eth0, what do you mean by configured with DNS IP addresses but no DNS? If you could attach an excerpt of /var/log/syslog, that would be most helpful. Please also consider running the 'apport-collect 579298' command, which can quickly add more information to your bug report, including the relevant bits from /var/log/syslog. Thanks!

Hi Mathieu,

"no DHCP",
I meant that my installation was not set up to use DHCP (as you can
see in the next line of my bug-report, that I configured the IP-setup
manually).

"no DNS available"
I configured the IP-setup manually, i.e. with a IP-address,
subnet-mask and gateway-address for the eth0 and IP-addresses for two
DNS-servers (which, just to avoid extra misunderstanding, all worked
fine for my Win7 installation, also manually configured).
But when the UNE tries to communicate, it has no DNS-servers available.
When I typed the IP-address myself, e.g. in a web-browsers
address-line or gave nslookup a DNS-server, the traffic got through.

I can't give you excerpts from the logs, as I gave up on the
Wubi-installation.
The bug recurred after two reboots and among many other things the
screen wasn't detected and the resolution couldn't be set manually to
correct values, the sound was rather bad and video and movie-showing
was very erratic.
BTW, I have used the same CD to install the UNE in it's own partition,
with a separate swap-partition. It works, though it can't detect the
screen and movie showing also is useless.
The kernel version is 2.6.32-24-generic at the moment. I can't
remember which version was running when I submitted the report, but
everything was fully updated, using Update Manager tool.
My HW is an Acer Aspire one, BIOS V0.3211, 1 GB RAM, 1366 x 768 screen
(1366 not 1368).
The Hardware Drivers tool can't detect any propriety drivers.

Should I understand from this that your bug is fixed? For the record, you can just as easily set up a manual IP address by editing the configuration for the Auto eth0 device in NetworkManager and using "Manual" for the Method under the IPv4 Settings tab.

Please open separate bugs for screen resolution/movie playback and report back here with the bug numbers when you do.
