Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Done.
4. I first ran into this issue when I scanned two pages with a white background, then placed the scanned images in OpenOffice writer and printed them on my HP Officejet 8000 wireless at home. The document printed with a light cream color background on the scanned area. I printed it on a black and white laser, and it was fine. Today at the office I printed several documents from websites using Firefox 3.6.3 with my HP Officejet K5400 and had the same cream color show up on those pages. I did a screen grab of a portion of one of the pages and inserted it into OpenOffice writer and that printed fine with the white background which is what it should be. Both the K5400 and the 8000 printers worked perfectly in Ubuntu 9.10. I could not find anything in your knowledge base for this issue.
5. I had the same thing happen on all web pages I tried printing from. On both computers, the upgrades were done from 9.10 to 10.04 through the Ubuntu upgrade and not through a clean install. I see in the information from running the check utility above that some things are missing. I don't know if that is the result of the upgrade or not, or if those things would cause this situation. I will appreciate your assistance!

Thank you.

Don

I installed all of the dependencies listed above except for sudo aptitude install --assume-yes libusb-dev
which would not install. I then reinstalled hplip through the Snypatic package manager. I still have the light cream backround color printing even though it should be white.

I did an on-line order this morning and printed out the order confirmation and also a Fax Cover Sheet from their site for additional information they desired, and they both printed with the cream background. I tried scanning a sample of these but the color differential isn't great enough to show up on a scan. I will be glad to send a copy to you if you have any problems replicating this issue. Is there anyway to go back to the driver used in Ubuntu 9.10 if that would help?

Just another update. I find that if I'm printing out an e-mail in Thunderbird I'm having the same thing happen. The entire page, even if the e-mail only is only a short one, has the entire page, except for the margins, printed with the cream colored background. I also checked my yellow ink level, and it is going down rapidly.

Another Update - My default settings for both the K5400 and the 8000 wireless are: printout mode - Draft (auto-detect-paper type) and Printout mode: Resolution, quality, ink type, media type: 600 dpi, color, black + color cartridge. In the printout mode I changed the setting to 600 dpi, Grayscale, Black Cartr. and printed the same e-mail I referenced in my last post. I wanted see if the cream color changed to a gray. I was shocked to see it didn't change at all. Even with only the black cartridge selected, I still got the cream colored background on the entire sheet.

Attached is an example of what I am seeing happening. If you go to the website at the top of the page, you will see that this page has a white background except around the thumbnails. I printed this first as a pdf file using cups-pdf, and then printed it on the 8000 printer. The yellow shading is twice as dark as it normally is if I print the page directly. The pdf file looked all white, but I'm guessing it must have a slight yellow cast also. I also have an HP 2605 color laser. If I print the file directly from it, it looks normal unless you look really closely at it. My brother has an HP 8500 all in one which also is doing the same thing to the same degree as the 8000 and K5400 printers are.

Additional printers affected: The HP Photosmart C309 in Ubuntu 10.04 is doing the same thing. The HP 3845 also does it, but it is very faint as compared to the K5400, 8000, 8500, and C309. It is about like the HP 2605 color laser jet where you have to look really hard to see it. I've also attached a copy of the pdf file for the page I attached last night. This pdf was created using cups-pdf in Ubuntu 10.04.

I have found a temporary workaround for now.

This bug seems to really be another bug described here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=580963

In order to get this working (This is more of a band-aid fix but works!) just remove the -dUseCIEColor flag from "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf"

It fixed the yellow "cream" background on my Officejet 8500. This problem seems to only affect ubuntu 10.04. I administrate about 100+ computers and we run nothing but Linux. We have various HP Inject printers and Brother Printers.

I have only just now started to see this issue come up on the Ubuntu 10.04 at a store where I am testing this new version.

Cheers!

Hi,

Thank you very, very much! The reason this is a big problem for me is
that I sell real estate, and all of the brochures I print out are
printed from our website. And thank you for confirming the bug! I'm sure
you are right about this being the same as the debian bug. I don't know
if this affects other printers besides HP or not.

This issue never showed up until Ubuntu 10.04. I've been using Ubuntu
for about 14 months now, and am 95% away from Windows. I've installed it
on about 20 computers for various people. I started with 8.10 about a
month before 9.04. Then I upgraded to 9.04, 9.10, and now 10.04. I've
learned a lot, but still I have much, much more to learn. Almost all of
these systems are running HP printers.

May I ask a question?
First, to delete the

-dUseCIEColor flag,

> PS2PDF_OPTIONS="$PS2PS_OPTIONS -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode \
> -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer -dUseCIEColor"
do I delete the entire paste above, or just put a # sign in front of
that. Or do I just delete a portion of the above? Also, should I be
posting this to the bug report to help others?

Thank you.

Don

You Welcome!

You just need to delete a portion of that line. It should look like the one below:

PS2PDF_OPTIONS="$PS2PS_OPTIONS -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode \
-dPDFSETTINGS=/printer"

Take note that the actual bug probably lay somewhere in ghostscript. This is a temporary solution. I do not know how it will behave with other printers (I think it should be fine though) So... Make a backup copy of '/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf' just in case :)

You can post this to the bug report but as mentioned before I would only use this solution as a temporary fix.

Have a great day!

Hi,

It works perfectly now!!!!!!! Thank you so much. My old laser printer
still works fine also. I would assume that once the real fix is out, my
Ubuntu updates would update things. Is this a correct assumption?

I hope you have or had a great day also!

When the updates are run it 'should' fix the issue; however it may be best to keep watch on what is being updated.

If you see an update for ghostscript, pstopdf, cups, lpr, etc... (basically updates that deal with printing) you may want to restore that file from the backup you created and then run the update. (This may or may not be necessary, but this is the safest bet.) Or just update your system on a regular basis (as you have) and eventually restore the backup and see if the issue is fixed.

From the testing I have done for the past week now; everything seems to be going great with the fix I have implemented on my test machine.

I was glad to have helped you. If you need any anything or have any other issues just send me a message.

Take Care!

Hi David,

Thank you again so much for everything. I've made the change on 6 of the
11 machines I've upgraded. They are all working fine.

Maybe this will help with the issue. I use cups-pdf a lot. If you
selected cup-pdf and printed a document before making the change (like
last week), it also had the cream color background. I printed one off
this morning that I created last Friday. It printed with the cream color
which means the cream color was also created in cups-pdf. I created a
new pdf this morning of the same document with cups-pdf, and then
printed the document on the K5400, and it is fine. Nice, white,
background!!!!!!!

If I can do any testing or be of additional assistance, please let me know.

Thank you again so very, very, very much for all of your help!!!!!!!!!!
