Bug Description

When shutting down a HP Pavilion dv7 I get a cracking noise out of the speakers. Test sounds on the other hand are all ok and Musik plays well also.

I found a similar bug - Bug #9365 - but that is from 2004 and should be fixed.

Martin, thanks for raising this as a bug.

Folks, there have been many comments about this issue in the forums, including mine at:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1486446

with several workaround suggestions, some of which work for some people, some of the time!

On my gear (see 1486446) the noise is a horrible banging and crackling, sometimes for 10-30 seconds after the PC has shutdown. It seems to me as though the gradual decay of the PSU's capacitors causes electrical noise, which is then amplified by the still-on amplifier. Yes I could first turn off the amplifier, but I want to shutdown remotely,whle I am near but not at the machine.

Note that this problem NEVER occurs using the same HW under WXP MCE. It seems likely that Windows shut down routines must be doing some sort of turn off at the sound card prior to shut down, and Ubuntu isn't!

This has been experienced by me with 9.04 Jaunty, 9.10 Karmic, and now 10.04 Lucid. I think I have tried both 32 and 64 bit in the past, but am now on Lucid 64.

Interestingly, my 9.04 Toshiba Satellite A10 laptop has never made those noises on turning off, and shows "shutting down ALSA" late in the shutdown sequence (quiet and splash removed). (I have not moved that to 10.04 yet because of the Intel 855GM bugs.)

I look forward to requests for tests to try or diagnostics to perform. Spelling them out 'for the dummy' would be appreciated! I'm not bad, but no guru!

Try linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev.

I wondered if Daniel Chen's suggestion was for Martin or me (Nick). Anyway, I tried it, and installed
linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32.-22-generic from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev but after a reboot, the shutdown still made the horrible noises. I assume that since Windows can avoid this problem, it must somehow be setting the sound card's output to zero before the final shutdown, so that any audio interference arising from the power supply turn off never reaches the amplifier. I'm sure if Windows can do that (whatever THAT is??!!) then Linux could do it to.

I remain hopeful!

I tested yesterday with Kernel 2.6.34 RC7 and the noise is now nearly gone - if I am pedantic - if not, it's just gone.

Today I created an image with the latest CloneZilla live CD 1.2.5-17 and on shutdown there was the cracking noise - Trying again with a normal Ubuntu 10.04 installation (no particular newer kernel) + all updates until yesterday the noise is already gone.

No such luck when I updated U10.04 my Dell Dimension 9150, but then a key difference is that my crackling noises are on an external amplifier which is NOT shut down when the PC turns itself off. Since the same HW with WXP does not exhibit the noise, I am still hoping to find there is some sort of 'turn off' that can be sent from Ubuntu to the sound card just before power off. Simply choosing mute on the speaker icon doesn't do it!

I am also experiencing a crackling noise when I reboot on Lucid, but I'm using an HP Pavilion DV6. I imagine the cause is similar or the same, though. Or should I make a separate bug report?

Here's some more info about my system:

$ uname -m
x86_64

$ uname -r
2.6.32-23-generic

$ lspci | grep Audio

any other info I can provide to help?

I was again dealing with the HP Pavilion dv7, I reported this issue with.
Guess what: Sound is now in general not working any more, but the crackling noise on shutdown still occurs (latest updates applied, so running 10.04.1 now).

In the meantime I solved the sound problem on the HP Pavilion dv7 - problems with levels of alsamixer being down (maybe Skype modified them) and some output settings wrong (guess they have been changed by accident).

Then I tried Ubuntu 10.10 beta from an USB stick and did not recognized the crackling sound any more (booted two times). So there is a good chance that the issue would be gone with 10.10. Would be cool if this could be fixed for 10.04 also because that workstation is being kept on LTS versions only.

But for being sure would be cool if other people experiencing this could also try with a 10.10 live CD and confirm.

Martin, thanks for that. I have just shut down my Dell Dimension 9150 U10.04 AMD64 with the speakers full on, got my head blasted with crackles as usual, and then booted from the alpha 3 U10.10 AMD64. Checked that sound was good, then shut down.

Not a beep, crackle or hiss. Silent as the grave. Wehey!

It would be good to know if this has happened as a deliberate recode by someone who knows what was doing it!

That should make it easier to do as you suggest, retrofit to 10.04LTS.
