Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

As the summary states, I updated to Ubuntu 10.04 and at the first restart (and all subsequent ones, until I fixed it), the display was messed up.

Meaning (in the order I noticed them):
- Some panel icons (Gnome Main Menu, Firefox) were replaced by the Terminal icon.
- There was only one desktop in the panel display.
- I couldn't switch desktops in any way.
- All windows I opened (desktop options, terminal, Firefox) were stuck at the top left corner, (in the case of Firefox noticeable) cropped to about a quarter of the screen, and had no decoration (window border, title bar (the one saying e.g. "Mozilla Firefox").
- I also couldn't enter anything in the terminal. Logging out via GUI worked, though.

Changing the System > Preferences > Appearance worked, but didn't help in any way.
I finally managed to fix this by switching to metacity and then straight back again (without reboot or anything) – suddenly all was fine.
Therefore the bug is probably hard to reproduce, but it can't hurt to report it.

The bug still occurs when I boot, and can be fixed in the described way – however, I can't fix it permanently, as it seems.
Also of interest is that another user on this machine, who also runs compiz, doesn't experience this problems.

I got this after upgrading from 9.10.

I have to select compiz effects (normal) in appearance.

If I don't windows will be forced on the top right of the screen.

I also have a large black X for a cursor.

The compiz "fix" is temporary as on reboot its reset.

Richard Dawe (richdawe) wrote :

I think this may be due to an old saved session.

I noticed in your XsessionErrors.txt file you had:

gnome-session[2704]: WARNING: Could not launch application '107f6475e7bc41cea3126599828048265200000016900024.desktop': Unable to start application: Kindprozess »/usr/bin/compiz.real« konnte nicht ausgeführt werden (No such file or directory)

I had this problem too. It looks like the program /usr/bin/compiz.real does not exist in Lucid anymore.

The following solved the problem for me:

rm -f .config/gnome-session/saved-session/*

If you have vital information in your GNOME saved sessions, perhaps you could edit the saved-session files to replace "compiz.real" with "compiz" instead.

Yoshi's workaround really helped, by the way, and now Richard's solution really solved the problem. I deleted the saved sessions (didn't even know I had some) and compiz started normally (without Yoshi's workaround).
Issue can be closed, I think, but don't know which status would be appropriate here.
