Bug Description

I formatted my HD and installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32bit on my Toshiba Satellite A505-6004 then installed the proposed kernel (2.6.32-22-generic-pae) that was thought to resolve the issue with the RTL8192se wi/fi not working.

I dual boot and the wi/fi works fine in Windows 7
Oddly enough the only time I was ever able to get the wi/fi to work in Linux was using the Live CD version of Linux Mint 8. After installing Linux Mint 8 to the HD the wi/fi would not see any networks.

Realtek sent be version 16 of the linux driver which is not on their site, but that still does not work.

can you rmmod the module and then modprobe it? I was able to see the access points with this kernel on my Asus 1201N

Can you give me the exact commands to rmod and modprobe?

Nevermind, I figured out the commands :P

root@ColdFox:/home/joseph/Desktop/rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0016.0301.2010# rmmod r8192se_pci
root@ColdFox:/home/joseph/Desktop/rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0016.0301.2010# modprobe r8192se_pci

I scanned for networks again and none were found.

I tried the following, hopefully the error will help

root@ColdFox:/home/joseph/Desktop/rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0016.0301.2010# ./wlan0up
insmod: error inserting 'r8192se_pci.ko': -1 Invalid module format

root@ColdFox:/home/joseph/Desktop/rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0016.0301.2010# ./wlan0up

joseph,

Looking at your comment #13 and dmesg.out put I am throughly confused!

1. It looks from your comment that you downloaded the rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0016.0301.2010 version of the module and built your self ?

2. Looking at the dmesg you are missing firmware files, and that is the reason the driver is not working for you.

I formatted, reinstalled, installed all 4 packages from http://people.ubuntu.com/~manjo/rtl8192se/, then did the following in the RTL8192se v16 directory
1. sudo su
2. make
3. make install
4. reboot
5. ./wlan0up or ./wlan1up

Same result with no scans. Here is the output of dmesg (I hope I did it right. I don't know how to open it myself, gedit can't find the character type encoding)

You *don't* need to recompile the module again, the kernel I posted already has the module and I tested it to work on my Asus 1201N that has the same wifi chip. So. The steps to follow are:

* Get all the debs from http://people.ubuntu.com/~manjo/rtl8192se/
* dpkg -i *.deb
* reboot.
* click on the network manager and see if the access points are listed.

I think I made a potential big mistake though. For some reason I
though Windows read my NIC as RTL8192se but it really reads it as
RTL8191seVA2. However, the Realtex site uses the same driver for the
RTL8192se and RTL8191seVA2 devices. I hope I haven't been a fool.
Also, here is the dmesg log again after the clean install and
following your directions.

Joseph Cooper,

  Fixes to the rtl8192se were included in the most recently released development kernel 2.6.35-16.22. We believe that these fixes may have an impact on your particular issue. As such, we would like for you to test this kernel and let us know if it resolves the problems you were having.

Thanks in advance for your testing of this kernel!
