Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After installing Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 with the newest updates I noticed when I attempted opening quadrapassel (gnome tetris) the gui freezes before it fully loads then slowly the graphics start coming in but in the end the game in completely unplayable and the gui locks down making me unable to close the game. I have also noticed when using vlc I will press pause and the song will pause but the graphic never changes from the play sign to the pause sign, its as if the gui gets locked. As for online flash videos every thing seems to work fine. I tried using the xorg edgers crack pushers ppa to see if it will fix the problem and it did fully fix all the problems except those drivers cause flash to freeze on full screen video. I have never had any Intel problems with Karmic Koala so I know it is something with the lucid driver for the Intel x3100 gm965 chipset.

I had a similar issue, which also looked like bug #554106 and duplicates. After upgrading to 10.04 LTS (Lucid) from 9.10 (Karmic), my desktop was responding extremely slowly. Painstakingly turning off desktop effects via System->Preferences->Appearance tab Visual Effects None gave me back a working desktop, but without effects. I'd had problems before with an old config apparently causing weird behaviour with newer software (bug #293535), so I set about bisecting config files again, and lo and behold, I found the problem.

Apparently turning on Vsync via CompizConfig Settings Manager (General Options, Display Settings, Sync To VBlank) gives an extremely low framerate (i.e. an update every few seconds on average), on an Intel GMA X3100 (GM965) video chip. I turned it off, and everything worked again. One might imagine VSync to slow things down to the speed of the monitor (60 Hz), but not below that. Apparently it does. Driver bug?

Ryan: If turning off VSync as described above does not solve it for you, could you try to create a new user account, and log in to that? Does that solve the problem? If so, then at least we know it's some old setting that is now causing problems.

Please do play with turning off compiz and changing its settings as described above.

Also, you might have more luck with the X-Updates PPA; it's more stable than the edgers

Sorry for taking so long to respond, I have tested out Fedora 13 and the bug is not present whatsoever. I just did a clean format install of Ubuntu 10.04, I did all the updates turned off compiz as Lourens Veen said and the bug still exist. I can also confirm that sync to vblank in compiz settings has never been checked off. I then took Stenten's advice and added the x-updates repository, updated my system, restarted and the bug is still present. Should I try to use Kernelcheck to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.33 to see if its a problem with 2.6.32? The reason I ask is because I noticed Fedora uses xserver-xorg-intel 2.11 which is what I am currently using but Fedora uses the newer kernel.

Yes, please try the current mainline kernel [1]. Download and install the _all headers, the i386 headers, and the i386 image.

I found your quadrapassel bug in gnome-games. It's Bug #519428. Please mark "Does this bug affect you too" and also subscribe to it.

I also believe your vlc issue is a vlc issue, not an X Server issue. Please file a separate bug in their bug tracker.

After installing the new kernel from the link given by stenten there is no longer a bug, I even tried out the 2.6.33 lucid trunk kernel and the bug did not exist anymore. There just seems to be a problem with the 2.6.32 kernel and I am happy that everyone here helped me solve my problem. The only problem I now face with the new kernel is the broadcom wireless sta/bcmw-source does not work anymore and I cannot get wireless internet. That is a completely different bug report and once again thank you, hopefully I can find a quick fix for my broadcom wireless card and get to enjoy using lucid lynx!

What bug are you talking about? Is there another bug other than the quadrapassel bug I linked you to?

I was having an extreme graphics regression bug with Ubuntu Lucid, every program I opened I encountered GUI problems, and this was with Compiz turned off. I solved my problem by upgrading to kernel 2.6.34 by the advice of Stenten and all my problems went away and Ubuntu Lucid ran beautifully. This proves to me that it was not part of a quadrapassel bug or VLC bug, something in the newer kernel completely fixes the problems I was having. I have rigorously been testing Ubuntu Lucid for about a month now with the new kernel and can confirm I no longer can find one graphics issue and the distro runs incredibly stable.

For the easiest instructions as to how to upgrade to the new kernel you can do this in terminal by:

downloading the packages: wget -c http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/linux-headers-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/linux-headers-2.6.34-020634_2.6.34-020634_all.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/linux-image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386.deb

install the packages: sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.34-020634_2.6.34-020634_all.deb linux-image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386.deb

I would like to thank everyone for their help and I am so happy that Lucid is now working the way it should!

Hi,
I am using kernel linux 2.6.32-24-generic-PAE

Unfortunately the fix is not for PAE kernel.
Do you have any ideas on how to fix it for people using PAE?

Thanks

Did you ever find a fix for the broadcom wireless issue caused by the kernel install? I'm having the same problem.

Here is the easiest instruction set I found to solve the broadcom issues as well as upgrading the kernel

If you have wireless cards Broadcom 43xx series first install packages

bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5
bcmwl-modaliases 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5

located here for i386 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5/+build/1781446
and here for x64 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5/+build/1781445

Open the terminal and run the following commands

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa && sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.35-17 linux-headers-2.6.35-17-generic linux-image-2.6.35-17-generic linux-maverick-source-2.6.35

Reboot and have the new kernel 2.6.35 installed
