Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

After upgrade to 10.4 from 9,10 online, consoles (Alt-F2,…) were unusable. The video display was corrupted.

Also the console during boot was corrupted.

This is a show stopper. System was restored to state prior to "upgrade."

System:
amd64 Intel quad
nvidia graphics (9400GT) with proprietary drivers, dual monitor with separate X screens

1st distribution upgrade was done bu "recommended" method, on-line.

Restored pre-update system, updated using alt CD, no download of "updates" from repositories.

Again the consoles (Alt-F2,…) were unusable. The video display was corrupted.

This is a show stopper.

This occurred on lucid, which is the latest version of Ubuntu.

The bug report was filed on 9.10 after restoration, since the system was unusable after the "upgrade".

The failed upgrade partition was zipped and stored so files are available from that. It would not be possible to run apport on an unusable system.
