Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

When I click o0n listen now on the BBC home page there are times when FF reports the BBC Radio 4 page as unavailable. If I immediately switch to Opera access is available.

The connection is effected via http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_radio_four and the report on the site is BBC Radio 4 FM is unavailable at this time.

At times I have switched over to Radio Scotland without any problem when I wished to check traffic news and there is no problem there. Again attempting to connect later in the morning usually connects to Radio 4.

This is a complete pain. What does it take to have a proper service from FF

I am currently using Lucid

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Could you please give us more detailed instructions on how you access the radio station? If I use the link you provided, I get the same error. However, if I go to the Radio 4 main page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/) and click "Listen Live," it seems to work each time for me.

Draycen

Thanks for the reply.

I usually use the link on the BBC home page every time when I wish to listen to the varying radio programmes.

As I type I am listening to BBC Radio 4 having used the link. Most of the time everything works perfectly. If it does not then again using the link in Opera works immediately.

It is why yesterday it will not work yet later on or on the next day it does. It is so frustrating that there is no hard and fast lever of service from FF.

I noticed that when I load the link you provided (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_radio_four) it doesn't work, but if I add 'fm' to the end (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_radio_fourfm which is what loads when I open it from the BBC site) then it does work. When you get the message that it is unavailable, are you seeing the URL without 'fm' at the end? Likewise, when it does work, do you see 'fm' at the end? This could be due to the wrong URL being loaded for some reason.

Again my thanks for your additional information.

Attempted to listen to 07:00 news to be denied yet again. As usual I was using the link on the BBC News page. Went to the Today home page with the same result.

Opened up my mail and and found your post which worked. That at least is minimal progress.

The obvious question is what ever happened to working just out of the box. To have FF so badly underperform is not acceptable! Why are we being foisted with this miserable browser.

I hope that you and others can please work your magic in order that normal service can be resumed.

Again my thanks

Ian

If the issue is with the webpage bringing you to the wrong URL, then it may be an issue with the site. If you hover the mouse over the link for the radio, Firefox should show the URL in the status bar. Can you check that before clicking the link to see if it shows that it will bring you to bbc_radio_four or bbc_radio_fourfm? If it says that the link points to bbc_radio_fourfm, but it doesn't bring you there, then the issue may be with Firefox. However, if the link shows bbc_radio_four then the issue is more likely due to the site.

As I compose this reply as usual I am listening to BBC Radio 4 and today everything worked perfectly by clicking on the link on the BBC Home page. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_radio_four is working as expected. Your suggestion of pre-checking the URL is not available to me. When I use the BBC Home page (bbc.co.uk) I have to click on the listen live radio connection before the URL displays. It then either works or displays the error.

I do not know enough about FF but on the basis that I can access all the other programme links via the BBC Home page 100% of the time the problem is with the browser. As I have stated before I can immediately open Opera and listen to Radio 4 perfectly.

The fact that the FF response shows that the programme is not available while Opera is delivering the content using exactly the same method I feel points to FF. Again the intermittent access in FF leads me to consider that there is something amiss with the browser.

I will rattle the BBC cage to see what reaction I get from there but would not be surprised if they blame FF.

Again thanks for your kind assistance

Ian
