Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

This problem started after I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from 9.10. Originally everything was fine, but then Firefox started to open without sizing correctly. For instance, on the right side of the screen where the up/down scroller is, it is almost outside of the screen resolution to where I almost can't scroll. Also, the browser on the top completely covers up the upper taskbar. The minimize/maximize/X that's normally in the upper right corner is completely gone.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: firefox 3.6.3+nobinonly-0ubuntu4

It was on default for "none." I attempted to put it to "normal" but Ubuntu said that this could not be accomplished so it went back to "none."

Thank you for your suggestions. I have enabled anything called compiz in the Synaptic Package Manager. Also, my computer (sadly) uses integrated graphics (until I can afford to upgrade). There are no proprietary drivers listed. Strangely enough, the desktop screen now has a blank vertical strip on the far right side of the screen. I wonder if this is more than just a firefox problem. If necessary, I am willing to go back to an earlier version of Ubuntu. Thank you.

As for the bar at the right of your screen, does anything show up when you right-click any of the squares? In the second screenshot, I don't know if the screenshot tool left out the window border or not. If there is no title bar, then can you try running 'metacity --replace' to see if the title bar shows up?

I'm also marking that this needs reassignment since it seems to be a problem beyond Firefox.

hi,
greetings,
i too have the same problem. i have already started a thread in ubuntuforums on this.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1474999
i have noticed that this happens with all programmes. i am trying to install all 'compiz' packages as suggested by Draycen DeCator.
i have found that open windows look alright in 'failsafe gnome' mode.
i will install compiz packages and then try booting in normal 'gnome mode'
jason - maybe you should try failsafe mode until this problem is fixed instead of going back on version.
have a nice day.

I reinstalled the metacity. Interestingly, the right side of the desktop behaved like a bottom row panel! Therefore, I was able to delete it! I attached a screenshot showing that happening. This however, has not fixed the firefix issue. Thank you for the time regarding this issue.

You should only need to install the 'compiz' package and everything it depends on (if it isn't already installed on your system).

@jason
Did you try running 'metacity --replace' in a terminal? This command restarts metacity, which may resolve the issue. If it isn't running at all, just running 'metacity' may be enough.

@nagaraj
It looks like you may be missing a graphics driver. Could you go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and see if there are any proprietary drivers for your graphics card that need to be enabled?

Thanks in advance!

thanks Draycen DeCator i could solve the problem after i installed 'compiz'.
@jason
i too had problems with grub while upgrading to 'lucid'. i finally installed without choosing any disk or partition for grub to load in and later installed grub by 'sudo apt-get install grub'. it installed in the right partition. maybe you can try that.
another thing is - this is only a hench - your firefox seems to be the only program that is not being displayed in incomplete window. just check if you had earlier stored firefox as a start up program from 'system>preferences>start up applications'? if yes or if you dont remember then close all applications and go to 'system>preferences>start up applications', choose 'options' tab and click on 'remember currently running applications' button. then reboot and start firefox and see if this solves the problem. ( of course your 'preference for appearance should be set to normal or higher)

thanks to all.
i will follow this string.
