Hello

Mark: Unfortunately it is not.

Bryce: Tell me if you need me to test something. I am still trying to replicate the problem in a repeatable fashion.

Hi,

I can confirm random X lock ups. Lenovo Thinkpad X200si. Cannot replicate. Not sure which logs to include.

Same here. I can also not reproduce it, but as I remember right, it happend only with an attached Monitor. I had this problem once a day! After disabling the visual effects I haven't seen X locks for around 10 days now.

I have been experiencing this as well.

I just (finally) got ubuntu up on my new x201 yesterday (was running into the KMS error, before).

Yesterday I used the laptop all day without a problem, I was working from home so it was just the laptop.

Today I brought it into the office and have experienced 2 or 3 freezes today. The differences include:

- external display
- external keyboard
- external mouse

I just turned off the visual effects (under appearance) which I guess turns off compiz. I'll report back if that helps.
Would anyone like me to attach any log files or other output?

Jon: Just to add to your findings. I discovered that with or without external screen, freezes do happen. I am running proposed archives so I noticed an update to X today. That might help the situation. So far so good but it has been a few hours only.

Anmar et al,

I just experienced another freeze. I had turned off compiz so it doesn't seem to affect it.

I will note that I have been playing audio (twice over flash, twice over rythmbox) with headphones plugged in. Something I wasn't doing yesterday. Going to try to keep sound off for the next few days and see that has anything.

I also experienced those freezes. Using the kernel patch from:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/554569
fixed this and many other problems.
Once I had a crash because of .xsessions-errors filling up m harddrive, but that is all.

Well I just reporting another freeze (two in a row! :( ). Both times I was not using my soundcard. I had been using an externel display, keyboard and mouse when this happened.

I will also note that I am using a patched kernel from the above thread. I am using the kernel debs provided by #45 and #46.

I have since disconnected my external display to see if that has any correlation.

I am not able to jump to a console when this freezes. No response from any input. I will try to open a ssh connection from another computer and see how that works.

I just had a lock and I did try SSHing into the system without a problem. It seems that X only crashed. Top wasn't reporting anything unusual. I looked at .xsession-erros with nothing of any value other some some things about python. that is all.

Can anyone confirm this is USB related? I can use my computer indefinitely without external USB devices but it will lock up with one plugged in.

There is also this issue https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/566149 that leads me to believe there are more than just one problem with the USB driver for x201. I will try that patch this weekend and test to see if it resolves this problem as well.

Well, hilariously, my computer froze right after I posted that. I had no external USB devices. I was playing music. I am going to disable my sound driver and see if that helps.

Hello Jon:

BTW, did you update your machine to the latest BIOS?

Lenovo issued a few updates, the latest on May 19 (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-74983)

After around 6 weeks I got a freeze again.

My machine is running on a custom Ubuntu-2.6.32.11 kernel (patched for the x201 internal GSM modem). I know that it's not an official one, but pherhaps the following information can help anyway.

The "visual effects" have been disabled all the time. For the first 3 weeks I've been using no external display. For the second 3 weeks I've been using an external 19 inch display configured to be on the LEFT side of my notebook screen. 4 days ago I switched back to my main external display, which has 24 inches an it's configured to be on the RIGHT side of my notebook screen. Today I got that X lock again. Music is still playing in the background and I can move the mouse pointer, but that's it.

If you are running Lucid and this is an issue for you consider running one of the lts-backport kernels.

If this _must_ be fixed in Lucid then add a nomination for lucid but the main task *is* fix-released.
