lots of flickering when changing virtual desktops, (de)iconifying windows, etc

When performing some window operations which used to be near instantaneous in 9.04, there is now lots of delay and flickering in 10.04. Worst is when changing a virtual desktop, but also (de)iconifying a window behaves strangely.

WTF? This is about 10.04 (a.k.a. lucid). The only reason why I mentioned 9.04 is because in that version it worked.
