Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Attempting to put a footnote into the caption section of a picture in Writer causes OpenOffice.org to crash 100% recreateably. Steps to recreate:

1. Insert a picture

2. Right-click on picture, choose "Caption"

3. Insert some text

4. Somewhere else in the text, create a footnote.

5. Highlight the footnote number (not the text below, the automatically created number), and cut or copy.

6. Click somewhere in the caption text, and hit try to paste the footnote. Instant crash.

Putting aside for the moment that I've since learned that this may not be a supported thing to do, OpenOffice.org /still/ crashes.

Of note, Bug 366183 is very similar, but doesn't highlight a crash, so this is a distinct bug.

Heh, good find, of course the fact your not allowed to create a footnote in the caption itself means its probably not supposed to work, but it still shouldn't crash.

Changed in openoffice.org (Ubuntu):

status: New → Triaged
summary: - footnote in picture caption -> crash
+ [upstream] footnote in picture caption -> crash

I experienced the same behavior by pasting the footnote number right *into another footnote* .
I think this is obviously a non sense in daily use but mine was just an experiment, it can happen by mistake as well.

Kevin Hunter, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is missing. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
