Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

HP Presario V2710US with ATI Xpress 200M 5955 graphics adaptor. Ubuntu 9.04 worked perfectly with this video adapter, but 10.04 does not. Google Earth will not zoom: the zoomed window shrinks from a diminishing rectangle to a dot, with radial rays emanating from the center. Also, noticed that YouTube videos cannot be expanded to full screen: Firefox crashes if that's tried.

I just want to emphasize that all graphics rendering worked well under 9.10. Also, I believe the subject laptop computer is 32bit architecture: 2.0GHz Mobile AMD Sempron™ Processor 3300+. The AMD specifications on this processor indicate 32 bit. I mention this because some of the comments suggest there may be some confusion or perhaps it's because this problem extends to the 64 bit world as well.

Hi Robert,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 574034

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 574034 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug xorg

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'
or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

Yes, it is only apparent with 10.04. I did not see this behavior with
9.04. I think it may be a new bug or something specific to 10.04.

I've tried various recipes that are reputed to solve this including this one found on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting

  sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # (if it exists)/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver
  sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
  sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
  sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
  sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

So far, it looks like ubuntu 10.04 does not play nice with the graphics card identified in sysinfo as:
    ATI Xpress 200M 5955 (PCIE)
    Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 3091

I may just revert to 9.10 which worked perfectly. I found no problems at all with graphics over the 5 months I ran 9.10 on this HP Presario V2710US notebook.

Hi everyone,

I happen to have the same exact problem with a radeon XPRESS 200M 5955, also on a presario V2000 notebook.
I tried compiling the latest xserver-xorg-ati from git, but it didn't solve the issue...
Apparently this is KMS-related, I haven't tried disabling it yet.
I'm also reporting, with the same card, etracer crashing before displaying any 3D with this error:
[73960.752864] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Failed to parse relocation -12!
(I'm having no issue with fullscreen youtube playback though)
Glxgears is a meager ~3000 fps

.... didn't try disabling kms, but am confident it would solve it ... but i don't feel like messing it this now ... need a system that "just works" (tm) ... so ... as the k in kms means "kernel" ... i think kms is under active development since quiet some time (middle major), so somebody (?? *look around* ... kms gurus ??? ... ) could start sorting out aesthetic issues like that one now ... :-) ... would be defenetly cool to have googleearth working properly ... that bug is quiet old (> 1 year for me) !
