Bug Description

This wireless usb interface used to work under Karmic by blacklisting various drivers:

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
----------
.
.
.
blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2x00lib
blacklist rt2800usb
----------

This no longer seems to work.

The network is correctly detected but it does not accept the WPA password entered, and continually spins until re-prompting to enter the password.

I tried this:

http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8893675

Basically downloading and installing the drivers from Ralink. But I got the same result.

some information that might be useful.

Hi ciaopaulo,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 573905

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Look sorry guys I've rolled back to 9.10. I did an update with the daily release and it completely screwed up the network (ie no networks at all detected!) plus some iffy low level pci warnings at boot, before login. I need to be able to use this laptop, so maybe someone else can run with this. (PS I tried the method Mortenrk linked to as stated in the first post... it didn't work)

Tested as advised by comment #6 (daily build of Sep. 24). It still doesn't work in Maverick. I'll try to collect some logs.

Please note that I have only borrowed this DWA-140. Actually I got it to find out how to make it work. So I might not be able to test with this device in future.

I just learned that there is an important difference between a DWA-140 and a DWA-140 ver. B2. The DWA-140 contains an RT2870, the DWA-140 B2 contains an RT3070.

The device I have borrowed is a B2, so the apport logs above apply to RT3070 only.

In Lucid downloading and building the RT3070 driver from Ralink solves the problem. (I have also the rt2800usb driver blacklisted, not yet double-checked whether that is required)

Maverick not yet tested.

Beside the blacklist, I downloaded the RT2870STA driver from RTLINK and just recompiled it.Then I reinstalled it. Everything works, but I had to make a copy of the rt2870sta.ko to the lib folder for each Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) upgrade I made otherwise the problem came back.

Thanks for all your efforts. Since the driver for this hardware is a very fast moving target could you all please retest. This hardware (in both its incarnations) is now (kernel 2.6.38) _supposed_ to work with the rt2800usb module.

If you are not using kernel 2.6.38 (ubuntu 11.04) you should be able to get the same driver from the backports package, which might be named something like:
linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.38

Please upgrade your modules, test and report your results in a separate bug report reported with (terminal window command):
ubuntu-bug linux

If you have done so make a comment here with the new bug number.

Thanks
