Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Hardware: Dell Latitude D800 notebook 1.4 Ghz

From Ubuntu 10.04 Live-CD, desktop has vertical streaks and pointer is corrupted. Appears as though pixels in vertical streaks moved laterally to a different location. This may be a video driver issue, but I don't know how to determine that. I'll try to attach a screenshot.

Hi, Bryce,

After running the command 'apport-collect 573682' from the Live-CD, I got
the following message:
Package xorg-server not installed and no hook available, ignoring

As always, I ran the CD error-check program from the menu of the Live-CD; it
claimed that there were no errors on the Live-CD. I'm moving tomorrow, but I
guess I'll have to burn another CD to see if the same happens. Hope this
isn't just a bad CD burn. :(

Additional Info: I double-checked the md5sum of the .iso image at the mirror and compared it to the md5sum of the .iso image I downloaded; they are the same. I burned a new CD anyway and the new Live-CD has the same problem so I don't think it's a bad CD burn.

I've noticed that the vertical streaks & corrupted pointer are much more pronounced during the Live-CD boot screen. (plymouth ?) The desktop seems to accumulate vertical streaks and displaced pixels when windows are opened, closed and resized (window edges ?) and as the pointer is moved.

As the release notes suggested, I tried booting the Live-CD with 'nomodeset' option under the F6 menu. Interestingly, the vertical lines were still there but everything (icons, pointer etc.) was doubled about 1/2-inch to the right. I mean 2 "Install Ubuntu" icons, 2 "Examples" icons, 2 pointers. Everything was too scrambled to get a screenshot. However the boot-up screen was undistorted with this boot method.

I had the same problem on my Latitude D800.

Switching to the Nvidia driver solved the corrupt display problem. However, I now don't see the Ubuntu splash screen after selecting kernel from the Grub menu.

Interestingly, this problem does not occur on my Dell D800 in VBox 3.1.8 r61349 w/Guest Additions when I boot from the Ubuntu 10.04 .iso image. It also occurs on my obsolescent AMD Thunderbird 1.4 Ghz with the NVIDIA FX 5200 video card when I boot from the Live-CD. The one thing these two systems have in common is that they both use (different) old NVIDIA video cards. My Dell D800 uses the NVIDIA GeForce4 4200 Go (32 MB) video card.

This is a regression since neither machine had this issue until Lucid.

Again, however this is with the Live-CD, not installed to hard drive. Needless to say, you can't activate the restricted driver on the Live-CD since it requires a system restart which wipes out the downloaded driver.

Exactly same problem here with the same Dell D800 with NVIDIA Geforce4 4200 Go and the LiveCD of 10.04. Vertical streaks when windows are moved, raised or collapsed, and corrupted pointer. Let me know if you need more info from me.

I can confirm this. The last version my Dell Latitude D800 with GeForce4 graphics worked with, was 8.04. That's what I'm still running. I tried installing 10.04 to HD and then installing the binary driver nvidia 96. But the problem remained after a reboot.
I remember trying other distros e.g. OpenSUSE last year with the same problem.

Same behavior with the 10.04.1 Live-CD. I haven't tried the 10.10 iso yet.

I'm not home now to check, but I believe earlier in this thread a D800 owner
stated that with 10.04 installed, he enabled the NVIDIA proprietary video
driver for his video card and that fixed the issue for him. My problem was
with the live-cd version.
