Bug Description
[Copycat - A blackscreen can also appear due to a bug in the ATI driver - workaround involving gnome-screensaver. (goto bug #546578)]
Binary package hint: nvidia-
Steps to reproduce:
1. While logged in as user A, System | Switch User
2. Login to user B (Xterm or Gnome session), ensure all is working
properly and logout from user B.
- screen goes black
- keyboard no longer works
- mouse no longer works
- remote SSH shows GDM does not start GDM - LoginWindow
session on the active TTY, as it normally does after logging
out with only one user on the system. TTY does not respond to
input.
Patch:
Install latest NVidia graphics drivers.
Hello!
I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop (lucid) from scratch.
Then I've made 2 users. Then I login as one user and switch to the second user using gnome menu (not gdm). (New feature in lucid).
When I do "Log Out" from the second user - video signal disappears and I'm not able to use neither X nor tty to do something with the system.
I have Nvidia driver (version 173.14.22) turned on. When I turn it off and do the steps described above - video signal remains, but when I return to the screen of the first user - the brightness of the screen goes very low. (Fade bug in Gnome?) And sometimes I even get black screen with lonely mouse. (The screen is not unfaded).
Maybe there are two different bugs? With nvidia driver (when screen is reset). And with gnome unfading when unlocking the screen.
Best regards, Vladimir

Same problem here, except that turning of Nvidia 173 always leaves the 'lonely mouse'. Even ctrl-alt-F1 does not show anything and returning to ctrl-alt-F7 returns the mouse pointer on black background
