The iso came through torrent.

The upgrade was done by mounting iso as cdrom

and then gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade".

If I'm not wrong, the error occurred because the system could not find the Lucid cdrom.
Have you upgraded in this way before? Can you try burning it and then trying to upgrade?

Changed in update-manager (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Let me know if it works; if not, we will try to find another solution (and
confirm this bug).

The partial upgrade attempted through update-manager (over internet) also fails. Tried to "Fix" broken packages in Synaptic. I am getting the following error.
/usr/share/themes/Human/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:85: Murrine configuration option "gradients" is no longer supported and will be ignored.
dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
syntax error: unknown user 'debian-transmission' in statoverride file
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:

Any clues? How will i take my state to a clean state? Lucid fresh install is costly as I have important files. pls help.

Seems removal of transmission-daemon has broken up the config.

FIXED!

Steps followed

1. Removed all lines from /var/lib/dpkg/statoverride that mentions the user debian-transmission (don't keep any blank lines in the file).

2. Fix broken packages using Synaptic package Manager.

3. Fresh upgrade by mounting iso as cdrom (Initial way).

4. The issue resolved(voila!).

Thanks Claud & Michael for helping out.
