Bug Description

Upgrading mysql server in the upgrade to 10.04 was hung. It said it was replacing a config file but didn't show a window to ask about replacing the existing file or anything, so after maybe 20 minutes I Control-C'ed to let the upgrade continue.

Nope. It should have been completely standard.

Hi. A bit more. Because for other reasons the upgrade failed I have done a
full fresh install. Installing the mysql-server clean it has also hung.
Unlike in the upgrade when I do ctrl+c and it asks if I really want to do
it, and I say yes, in Synaptic it is not killing and skipping it. I'm not
sure that it is having the issue at exactly the same place because during
the upgrade it mentioned something about doing something with the
configuration file, this time it just show "setting up mysql-server-5.1".
Something called polkitd is the only thing using much cpu. If I kill that it
comes back. It's been stuck there for maybe half and hour.

Oops, so I should have been doing sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start, so that last
error is irrelevant. So now when I do it correctly it tells me that i should
now use sudo start mysql or sudo service mysql start. Both of these report
that mysql is already running when during the install it has hung on start
mysql, as in the screen shot.
