[Asus M4A78-E] Ubuntu 10.04 freezes

Lucid appears to freeze on me after an unspecified length of time. This did not happen on Karmic, and my hardware has not changed inbetweenwhiles.

Once the freeze has begun, web browsers cannot connect to web pages, then opening a terminal will not get a prompt, just the window opens. Finally, after a bit longer the whole system freezes requiring SysRq+REISUB to restart and get going again.

This also happens without using the fglrx driver.

Present with a BIOS update to 2505.

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Will try out the upstream kernel later today, god the freeze again
today, see the further information attached to the report.

It happens also in 12.04. 12.10 and 13.04. But only if the amd radeon drivers for the hd5870 are installed. without them, no freeze but a 100% gpu fan speed ....
